Miconge is a commune of Angola, located in the province of Cabinda.

Eduardo Camavinga, a French footballer, was born in the town.

History

During the Portuguese Colonial War (1961-1975), Portuguese forces were stationed here, at an outpost of B.Cav 3871 (Cavalry Battalion 3871) in Belize. After the MPLA established itself here from the nearby Republic of Congo beginning in 1963, an attack on the Portuguese military camp of Miconje was the prelude to the MPLA's struggle in Cabinda.

The camp, which has been preserved, is to be protected as a future national historical-cultural monument (Portuguese: Património histórico-cultural nacional), as part of the memory of Angola's struggle for independence.

Administration and Geography

Miconje is the seat of a municipality (comuna) of the same name in the district (município) of Belize in the province of Cabinda. 5,014 people live here in an area of 744 km².

In the municipality lies the high-altitude forested region of Alto Sunde (also Alto-Sundi), part of the mountainous rainforest of Mayombe, which straddles the territories of the Republic of Congo, DR Congo, Gabon and the Angolan exclave of Cabinda.

A number of localities lie within the municipal territory, including:

  • Caio Guembo (Alto Sunde region).
  • Kiluamba
  • Kicumba Congo (Alto Sunde region)
  • Kungo Tadi (Alto Sunde region)
  • Miconje

Economy and traffic

Miconje is connected to the provincial capital of Cabinda by the N-110 national highway. Once its rehabilitation is completed during 2022, it is expected to boost the municipality's economy.

In the municipality of Miconje, small-scale agriculture is the main livelihood activity, but forestry is also practiced. In the future, agricultural projects are also to be developed on a larger scale, including the regionally promoted cultivation of cocoa, and here in particular the cultivation of Arabica coffee in the mountainous Alto-Zundi region in the municipality of Miconje.

A German economic commission visited the region in early May 2022 to agree on various investment opportunities. Among them was a solar park that will be built in the municipality of Miconje, where the corresponding land of 1000 hectares has already been prepared.

The Miconje municipality is home to one of the 32 projects approved by the authorities for the extraction of gold. After ten have already been initiated, the remaining 22 are still under preparation, including the planned mining facilities in Miconje, which will be operated by the company Lombe Mining.
